Why do gums bleed?

When might more than scaling be needed?
If deeper gum pockets, persistent inflammation or bone changes are present, further periodontal assessment and treatment may be needed. Cleaning the visible tooth surface alone may not address the full problem.
What is checked?
The examination can include bleeding sites, gum pocket measurements, plaque and calculus, relevant X-rays and health factors. Keep cleaning the area gently and ask for guidance rather than avoiding it entirely because it bleeds.
