Pain on biting can come from decay, a crack, an old filling, the gums or the way teeth meet. The timing of pain helps guide examination.

Why Does a Tooth Hurt Only When I Chew?

This English guide presents the key points of the original Korean article. Individual diagnosis and treatment choices require an examination.

01

More than one possible cause

A crack, decay beneath a restoration, inflammation around a tooth, a pulp problem or a bite that loads one tooth heavily can all cause pain. An examination is needed to distinguish them.

02

Describe when the pain occurs

Does it hurt as you bite, when you release pressure, or only with hard food? Is one tooth easy to locate? The pattern, along with clinical tests and appropriate imaging, helps the dentist assess the cause.

03

Does it always need a crown or root canal?

No single treatment fits every cause. Some teeth need an adjustment or restoration; others need protection of a cracked area or treatment of the pulp or gums. Avoid chewing on the painful side until it has been assessed.
